Film has a crucial role in the development of architectural theory. This has always been a dialectical relationship, where the construction of buildings influence the construction of films, and vice versa. The challenge, of this seminar, is to subvert a now over-exploited medium as film, in order to reclaim its theoretical potential. Trough the seminar participants will explore film as an architectural medium, understanding it as a research and communication instrument in the architectural field. 
Participants will produce a film-essay, in order will to frame their thesis project by giving a clear insight of their work.

Investigating the presence-absence regime, showing and hiding, where architecture and film act as a single device, part of a social and ideological assembly that oscillates in a constant movement of transparency and opacity, within an apparatus of normalization and control. From this perspective, a series of experiences and projects are analyzed from the perspective of modernity, where this relation has been explored from different perspectives, speculating on how the representations in cinema have influenced and subverted the physical and conceptual structures of architecture, and vice versa.

What were the achievements and shortcomings of the events of May 1968? How was May 1968 particular to Paris; while, at the same time, reflective of a worldwide zeitgeist? How does place influence thought? What were the consequences on architecture education and discourse? What is the relationship between the architecture of a school and its curriculum? Does objective reality exist in an era of “post-truth’? When the personal becomes political, can film and narrative make one conscious of reality?

The master class will conclude with a multimedia pop-up exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.

In the Age of Social Media the smart-phone camera is omnipresent, and the principle generator of social media content, and a highly personal tool for creating theory. Videos are now being produced and disseminated with a new sense of urgency. In this context, it is important to remember that film has had a crucial role in the development of architectural theory. This has always been a dialectical relationship, where the construction of buildings influence the construction of films, and vice versa. Film has a unique capacity to articulate complex ideas in complex forms and combinations. The challenge, then, of the master class, was to subvert a now over-exploited medium in order to reclaim its theoretical potential.

During the first part of the master class, participants will learn film, interview, and narrative techniques. From writing and cinema to advertisements and public service broadcasting, they will explore the historical and contemporary use and depiction of the bed across media to develop means by which to “theorize through film.” Under the guidance of filmmaker Mauricio Freyre, participants will create a cinematographic prequel to Colomina’s “The Century of the Bed” essay.

The master class will conclude with a collective audiovisual exhibition at The Berlage.

This is the strange fruit of a master class where we tried to reflect on some of the larger environmental issues and predicaments that affect the meaning and ways of architecture today: a relay race of young architects through space, time and environment, the staging of an impossible conversation, a domino game of concerns.
Clearly, the idea that the cosmopolis is “an accumulation of possible disasters that never happen” seems everyday more akin to a Ponzi scheme of wishful thinking.
A number of themes — Energy, Autonomy, Prophecy, Entropy, Machines, Elements, Resilience, Memory, Obsolescence — were initially proposed as triggers, to start structure and polarize an amorphous latency of concerns, into as many sequences of a narrative or journey.
Film is used here as a provocative means of reconnecting architecture with the environment its fundamental responsibility: giving space to time, and time to space.
An intense race indeed, as Marcel Proust once remarked: “One must think as if he were eternal, and work as if he was to die tomorrow”.
